Shetland Divers

Always good to see a Great Northern Diver, especially in breeding plumage
Although they don't breed in the UK they often summer in Shetland
The south Mainland often holds between 10-15 birds in winter with increasing numbers as birds return north having wintered in Scotland
Gt Northern Divers can cover long distances under water so you never can predict where to focus

It has been good to see all 4 divers this winter/spring with a Black Throated Diver still in Quendale bay
White Billed Divers (2) in South Nesting Bay while another couple could be seen in Unst. They birds are more difficult so see as they stay well off shore

Red Throated Divers came back in numbers last month to join a few that over wintered.
They are now back breeding. It will be interesting to see how many are affected by the large Viking Wind farm development which covers an area used by the divers
