Since my last blog I have been to Lerwick looking for white winged gulls. Having seen distant Glaucous gulls, and a close Iceland I wanted to try and get closer photos. I arrived the other day to find Hugh Harrop throwing bread out to a group of gulls, one of which was a Kumlien's Gull
This gull looking similar to an Iceland at first glance, but was quite large and had the characteristic shadowing on the outer web primaries and in particular the tongues (Hugh Harrop)
Kumlien's Gull originate from the Baffin island to NW Quebec region and normally winters in North America. Kumlien's Gull are highly variable with hardly any two birds alike.
Last year a few Kumlien's turned up with a record number of Iceland Gulls
