Fall of migrants in Shetland

I do miss small birds and their song, but the last few days we have had numerous little birds dropping into Shetland .

This was all down to birds migrating and then meeting foggy rainy weather.

Along Swinster Burn in Sandwick at least 21 Willow Warbler, Pied Fly, Chiff Chaff 6 and Whinchat. Down in Lerwick I had a walk up Helendale to the big house, its not a long road but it did turn up Willow Warbler (5) Chiff Chaff (3) Blackcap (3) White Wagtail, Robin (3), Wren & Song Thrush.

These numbers started to add up with at least 200 Willow Warbler and lots of other birds including Wryneck, Rustic Bunting, White Tailed Eagle, Hooded Merganser (m) , Citrine Wagtail and a couple of Marsh Harriers.

The fall continued into Tuesday when we looked round Grutness.

Willow Warbler (16) Blackcap(1) Swallow (5) Cuckoo, House Martin, White Wag, Arctic Skua, Gt Skua, Great Northern Diver, Red Throated Diver, Shag (8) Eider (8) Skylark, Meadow Pipit, Rock Dove (70) Lapwing (4) Curlew (8), Ringed Plover (2) Dunlin (70) Turnstone (80) Purple Sandpiper (30) Redshank (6) Oystercatcher (10), Blackbird (6) Arctic Tern (6) Common Gull (50) BHG (6) Starling (100) House Sparrow (30) Wheatear (3) Robin(3) Redstart, Raven (6) Gt BB(4) Mallard (2) Hoddie (4), Twite(2), Chiff Chaff, Herring Gull (6), Whinchat, Wren, Sanderling, Knot, Cormorant

I had a chat with Roger Riddington who seems to be a magnet for rare birds and he said a Yellow Browed Warbler had been on the far wall of the garden earlier, of course despite a search i didn't find it and i also failed to see the Little Bunting up at Sumburgh Head.

Over at the Quarry

Robin(3) Redstart, White Wagtail, Twite(2)  Willow Warbler (3) Chaffinch , Fulmar (2) for the first time in years they seem to have deserted the quarry, normally I would find 50-60 pairs.

Willow Warbler

Hoswick (22) , Spiggie (40), Geosetter (10), Bigton (10) , Ireland (12), Scatness (25), Baltasound (30)
